BrightStar Connections for Dementia Care
BrightStar Connections is a proprietary program detailing BrightStar Senior Living’s Best Practices in Dementia Care. The program includes required training modules for new staff, along with ongoing resources to update the knowledge base of all staff working with individuals with dementia. The Connections programs guide staff in thinking about what life would be like for them or their loved one in the shoes of a person with dementia. It challenges staff to understand how language, words and sounds change through memory loss. It invites them to think about how dignity, personal connections, beauty, joy and individual needs manifest themselves in their own lives and how life would be different if they were void of those core experiences.
Our care staff is also trained to look to essential personal needs first when supporting a person with dementia. This includes access to basic needs like food, water, shelter and a sense of belonging. We continually encourage positive behaviors and provide gentle redirection in more stressful circumstances, which is key to maintaining a safe and pleasant living experience. Interactive learning and mentorship are essential parts of BrightStar Connections training and go a long way in helping residents connect to their world and the offerings within the community.
Residents experience the Connections program through daily living. The intentional way a resident is provided care, engaged in programming and supported through mealtime is all guided by Connections training, which happens at the core of any staff member’s onboarding.
